Data Breach, again!

A thumb drive containing health records of nearly 34,000 patients was stolen from a Santa Rosa medical office last week, officials said Wednesday., June 11, 2014.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports the drive was stolen June 2 from an unlocked employee locker at the former Redwood Regional Medical Group imaging center. It was the only item of value taken.

A spokeswoman for St. Joseph Health, which recently took over the office, said Wednesday the device contained information on 33,702 patients who received X-ray services over a five-year period ending last month.

Among the information contained on the drive are patients’ names, gender, medical record numbers and date of birth. It did not include any financial information, including insurance data or Social Security numbers.

Officials say new procedures are being implemented, including adding security personnel.
